  • Cambodia – Ta Prohm and The Bayon

People wondered why I wanted to go back to Cambodia and see the temples again and I really can’t say much except for you have to be there to really understand it.  I loved being back in the same places I was last year… it felt good to see it all again, see more and see parts I missed last time.  Ta Prohm and The Bayon (Angkor Thom) are two of my favorites… one full of character with it’s many changing faces and the other just seems alive inside its rundown state…

Ta Prohm… The temple they used as the setting for Tomb Raider just before Laura Croft went inside the temple (the tree is famous for it’s cameo in the movie and Angelina tried to adpot it as well).  We had a hard time finding it because my map didn’t work properly and they moved the temple since the last time I was there (I think).

The Bayon in Angkor Thom… I love this place.  The faces on the towers change as the sun moves across the sky.  I love just staring at the faces and seeing how much character they have in them even after 900 years…

We saw a guide showing someone that if you sit in this one window and aim the camera perfectly it looks like you are kissing one of the faces of the temple.  Of course we all had to try… some of is enjoyed it more than the others…

More videos and some actual stories about or travels later (when I have more than a few minutes of free time)…

Tell me if the videos don’t work please… someone said the Rishikesh one wasn’t working yesterday!

  • Still uploading pictures and videos to the laptop from our trip.  So many things to show and write about… I’ll start you off with this and I’ll get more (a lot more) up on here later.

India – Rishikesh by the Ganges River…

    More later…

  • Second Tour of ‘Nam… Done!!!

    • We are now on our way to Bangkok for three days of relaxing and massages before going back to Taiwan
    • We did the Mekong River tour and the underground tunnels of Cu Chi (which were way too small for me) and shopped a lot
    • Eva had to buy a new bag for all our stuff… it’s full already
    • The money here is confusing… one coconut is $10,000… which is really less than one dollar
    • Her new bag cost $130,000… or $8 US
    • I may leave her here if she drives me any crazier! She’ll survive… everyone thinks she’s from here anyway.
    • Off to get some food and kill some time (and money) before the airport…
    • The real, cheap stands here are better than the big restaurants… but most don’t realize that.  We are cheap, so we do!!!

  • Vietnam… a Country, Not a War

    • I saw a shirt with the slogan above… I think I may have to buy it.
    • Cambodia went by too fast, but we got to all the temples we wanted to see and still got great massages, some good new clothes and ice cream from The Blue Pumpkin (a must in Siem Reap)
    • We are booked to see the Chu Chi Tunnels tomorrow and then to the Mekong Delta for a day trip on the boats.
    • I’ve used an entire 1GB memory card on the trip for videos and pics.  Good thing I brought a back-up
    • Everyone here thinks Eva is either Vietnamese or Japanese… no one speaks to her in Chinese
    • Our room in finally ready in our second hotel, so it’s time to unpack and relax in our third of four countries.
    • I need more Fanta…

  • 13 Days in India… Then Gone!!!

    • We are on our last day in India right now and then off to Cambodia for 6 days in Siem Reap.
    • We’ve been to Agra, Jaipur, Udaipur, Pushkar, Rishikish, Hardiwar and Delhi… some good, some bad… two amazing
    • Indian food is amazing… I need to take some samosa’s on the plane with me to Bangkok tonight.
    • My stomach hurts… maybe not
    • More updates when we are out of India…

  • So Busy… Then Gone…

    • Elmo (Not My Cat) is in his new home.  I’m glad he finally has a real home, but I miss the guy.
    • We just finished booking hotels for the trip and we leave for the airport in less than 2 hours… I’m not the best planner!
    • Nepal is officially out for this trip… but we get more time in India and Vietnam as a bonus…
    • I have less packed for this trip than any of my other trips and this one is 27 days opposed to 6 in Cambodia, 4 in Vietnam and 13 in the Philippines.
    • I returned the Nepal Lonely Planet book and they made me use credit.  It was an expensive book and I don’t like that bookstore’s prices.  I ended up with a copy of Journey to the West (Monkey) and The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (to be read on the trip).
    • I really should be sleeping now, but it probably won’t happen.
    • Time for the longest trip I have taken so far.  Updates when I can, but we will be all over India, then Cambodia and Vietnam, then three days in Bangkok to finish the trip…
    • See you later…

  • This has had me laughing for a while tonight…

    • We may have to cut out Nepal from the trip.  Our time constraints are a little tighter than we thought.  Although it is possible, it may make us rush a little too much in some areas.
    • We decided to fly from Siem Reap to Saigon to cut down on two days of bus rides.  It gives us more time in Vietnam to do some of the day trips like the Mekong Delta and to see the southern tip of Vietnam.
    • I have enough change saved up from the last eight months in two jars that will pay for about 85% of the tickets from Cambodia to Vietnam to keep from dipping into our spending money.
    • For some reason my Visa into Vietnam is only good for ten days while hers is good for 30.  We wanted to try to go a few days earlier to Saigon, but they dated the Visa for the 20th, so we can’t enter until then.
    • Just reading about India and everything you have to be careful of and watch out for is tiring me out.
    • I think the next big trip will be only three countries… Nepal, Sri Lanka and Singapore.  I’ve already looked into it and it’s very doable for a good price.
    • I want to go away for four days for my birthday in October.  Singapore is a possibility, but I think maybe Japan if I can find out about wrestling events on that weekend… sumo or pro, I’m good with both!
    • The cat (now named El-Moe) is still here.  The woman adopting him keeps changing the pick-up date.  We may need to get him a Visa for India as well!
    • I just started watching the show Durham County.  I interviewed the star of it, Hugh Dillon (also from Flashpoint) when I was in university and he was the very inebriated lead singer of the Canadian punk band The Headstones.  He spit beer at me.  I spit back…
    • I’m tired…

  • Here’s a story, of a hog named Pumba
Who came from Canada to Taiwan to find a home
He’d lost his best friend, who’s name was Bubba
    He was all alone…

Here’s a story, of a poo named Domo
He’s from Japan so we know he’s crazy,
He lived in a claw machine, with the other Domo’s
but he wanted to be free…

Then one one day when Pumba found the Domo
They knew that they were much more than just toys,
They became the best of friends, and traveled the world,
And that’s the way they became just The Boys…

These guys are racking up some serious frequent flyer miles!!!

  • Suddenly I turned around and she was standin’ there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair.
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns.
    “Come in,” she said,
“I’ll give you shelter from the storm.”

We went looking for the cats the other night as Brandy hadn’t been to visit for a while.  We saw all the regulars and noticed the missing cats from the parking lot… especially NTU.  We walked through the lot and looked at the changes to the lot.  They had taken out the old, run-down sheds that sat at the end of the parking lot… old, long since used food stands from the older days of the Bitan Bridge.  They had also removed a lot of the bushes and hedges that donned the hill beside the parking lot entrance where a lot of the cats lived, hid and called to us from.  The area at the end of the lot was also changed with an observation deck and new seating for visitors.  IT just isn’t the same as it was for the cats before as they lived in and under the sheds, in and out of the bushes and they could freely climb down to the water at the end without people getting anywhere near them.

We visited all the different groups and I introduced Brandy to some of the new cats and kittens of the prides.  She got some good photos of some of the cats I will share later.  We saw the old feeding lady who feeds all the cats every night.  We asked her about NTU, and it took her a second to recognize who we were talking about.  Brandy told her it had been a month since we saw her and were very worried.  She laughed and told us the cats from the parking lot had movied up to the alleyway across the street where she lived when they took out the sheds and the bushes.  She said she had just fed her ten minutes before…

We quickly backtracked and headed across the street from the parking lot entrance.  We called out.  We saw Big Orange, Little Black and a few others we hadn’t seen in a while.  We still didn’t see NTU, but the feeding lady said she was there, so we were happier.  Then it happened.  We were about to walk away and that old familiar meow came from under a car to our left and there she was… NTU!!!

I guess it’s not always a bad thing when one of my street cats disappear.  She was smart and her pride headed to higher ground.  More cover, a little safer and still close to their food they have become accustomed to.  We gave her a full can of food all to herself and tried to get some pictures.  She is still leery of people, but she knows us and knows we love to see her, talk to her and feed her.  I never knew the meow of just one of my many street cats could make me want to laugh and cry at the same time.

She’s back and now I have to add a new area to my feeding walks as the Parking Lot Pride has moved to the alleyway.  I don’t mind though… I get to see a cat I really thought was gone forever…

NTU Cat… back and ready for more food!
